Departmental Overview

Facilities Services works to maintain a campus built environment that is conducive to teaching, learning and research. We strive to continuously improve the campus in partnership with all members of the campus community.

Facilities Services is comprised of the following units, Cal Zero Waste (formerly Campus Recycling and Refuse Services), Custodial Services, Customer Service Center, Engineering and Technical Services, Environmental Services, Grounds Operations, Shops, People's Park.

Facilities Services' mission is to continuously improve facility services for the campus community in partnership with clients and staff. The department is comprised of several separate units which include: the Director's Office, Support Services, Operations, Grounds, Custodial and Environmental Services, and Sustainability and Engineering Services.

This position is responsible for the maintenance and repair of the campus' fire alarm systems, life safety monitoring systems, communication and control systems and other life safety equipment e.g. fire extinguishers and emergency eyewashes/showers

Responsibilities

LIFE SAFETY TECHNICAL DUTIES

Responsible for the maintenance and repair of new and/or modified low voltage wiring and devices.This includes but is not limited to: troubleshooting, predictive and preventive maintenance, inspections, testing operations, service repairs or replacement of defective devices discovered during testing when it is a matter of replacing like for like, specifically in relation to the campus' fire alarm systems, life safety monitoring systems, communication and control systems and other life safety equipment e.g. fire extinguishers and emergency eyewashes/showers.

Perform preventive maintenance, inspections, testing sustaining services, troubleshooting and repairs and/or replacement of complex control and life safety system components. Isolate and identify system hardware problems and troubleshoot and repair hardware failures. Identify modem and phone line problems; calibrate field point devices, replace failed devices; fabricate cables and connect. Install, connect, test, operate, modify, repair and replace controls, fuses, signaling devices, switches, timers and wiring devices. Operate, calibrate, adjust, clean, service and repair low voltage components. Perform fire alarm shutdowns that can be done by keyboard changes at the panel.

COMMUNICATION LOOOP MAINTENANCE

Input and test the campus wide fire alarm system communication network at each location with relation to the UC Police Department (CAD) Computer Assisted Dispatch operational system.

Communicate any malfunction to the campus fire alarm electrician and UCPD for immediate attention.

EXTINGUISHER/EMERGENCY EYEWASH & SHOWERS

Inspect & service fire extinguishers, emergency eyewash sinks, and showers in accordance with life safety mandates. In addition, the incumbent will document safety inspections.

ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES

Adherence to the scheduling of work through the work management program is required. Consult

shop superintendent and/or lead for technical information. Interpret prints, schematics, wiring

diagrams, flow charts and written descriptions of functions and project requirements. Support

maintenance projects and programmatic work assignments. Keep accurate work records and complete paperwork in a neat and timely manner. Define and describe materials, tools and/or

equipment, work methods and task sequences. Serve as liaison with clients, relaying their needs and requirements to the appropriate department or superintendent. Obtain materials and equipment as required.

SAFETY

Adhere to all University and Departmental safety guidelines. Attend job-related and safety training as required.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

* Education and training in Fire/Life Safety systems that can be through documented experience and/or professional development through an accredited technical college, apprenticeship program, or university.

* Must be able to interpret complicated circuitry designs and have a good understanding of electronic devices and Fire Alarm Systems, monitoring systems and other life safety systems.

* Knowledge and ability to utilize correct tools, techniques and methods for handling specific electrical projects by applying thorough knowledge of codes and the skills of a crafts-person.

* Ability to interpret prints, schematics, wiring diagrams, flow charts and written descriptions of functions and project requirements.

* Ability to operate electrical machines, equipment, and other hand and/or power tools needed to perform skill-related job tasks.

* Ability to work in confined spaces and to gain access to areas that normally require stairs, ladders and scaffolding using specific methods to perform job tasks.

* Ability to safely move supplies and objects up to 75 pounds with or without a reasonable accommodation.

* Must possess excellent communication skills and ability to interact in a positive manner with the campus community, including students, building managers, academic personnel, and craft personnel, in a multi..,cultural environment.

* Ability to track jobs to completion and prioritize requirements; able to work and support shutdowns and project schedules to minimize interference with others.

* Ability to read information from equipment manufactures manuals, service requests, layout sketches, blueprints, appropriate state and local government codes, trade-specific manuals and practices, and to determine how the fixture or equipment should perform.

* Ability to distinguish colors and use color codes effectively.

* Ability to communicate clearly over the telephone and two-way radio.

* Ability to execute job assignments in a timely manner.

Education/Training:

* Education and training in Fire/Life Safety systems that can be through documented experience and/or

professional development through an accredited technical college, apprenticeship program, or

university.

Licenses or certifications:

* Must possess NICET (National Institute for Certificate in Engendering Technologies) Level 1 and 2, or obtain within 6 months of hire.

* Must possess California State Fire Extinguisher Certification, or obtain within 6 months of hire.

* Must possess California State Fire Alarm Certification, or obtain within 6 months of hire.

Salary & Benefits

This is a non-exempt, hourly position. The hourly pay for this role is: $33.31 per hour
