Job DescriptionDevelopment Associate (Oakland) Californians for Justice is a statewide grassroots organization working for racial justice by building the power of youth, communities of color, immigrants, low-income families, and LGBTQ communities. Led by students, we organize to advance educational justice and improve our social, economic, and political conditions. CFJ is a unique and exciting organization. We are the only grassroots organization in California that organizes youth to have a voice in both local and statewide education policy. Our campaign and policy reform goals at the local and statewide levels include adequate and equitable school funding, increased access and success in K-12 and higher education, and ending the "school-to-prison pipeline." We lead the Student Voice Campaign, a statewide alliance of organizations working to ensure the voices of students are heard, valued, and reflected in decisions that affect them. Our recent statewide victories include a requirement for districts to include student input in school budgeting in 2014, and the passage of the historic Local Control Funding Formula in 2013. Our local offices have won several key changes in their school districts, from expanding a "Race and Social Justice" ethnic studies course to the elimination of discriminatory discipline policies and securing more college preparatory classes. CFJ currently has four regional offices in Fresno, Long Beach, San Jose and Oakland, 27 full-time equivalent staff and a budget of $2.5 million. Position Overview The Development Associate will manage CFJ's grassroots fundraising efforts (individual donations and sponsorships), planning and implementing several annual individual donor fundraising campaigns, including fundraising events. The Development Associate will also provide administrative and scheduling support to CFJ's executive director. This is a great fit for someone who is seeking a position with a high level of ownership where they can quickly gain fundraising and nonprofit experience. The Development Associate is a full-time, non-exempt and hourly position based in CFJ's Oakland office. They work closely with the Development Manager and report to the Development and Project Director. Essential Responsibilities Donor Cultivation and Solicitation (60%) Support cultivation of donors through donor solicitation, acknowledgement, events, and regular communication. Work with the Development Manager to plan, strategize, and evaluate grassroots fundraising campaigns and activities. Coordinate planning for all regional fundraising events, including annual fundraisers in all 4 regions. Develop and mail donation acknowledgements on a regular basis. Coordinate postal mailings including list generation, drafting and editing letters and forms, and mailing. Develop and update materials for three annual fundraising appeals. Coordinate staff participation in donor cultivation activities, including: creation of instructional materials, staff training, participation oversight, preparation of regional campaign coordinators, and staff recognition. Participate directly in all grassroots fundraising campaigns, and provide regional leadership in Oakland. This includes calling current and prospective donors. Database Maintenance (10%) Administer and maintain databases according to fundraising and organizational needs. Systems currently include: Salesforce, Salsa Labs, and Razoo. Collect, track, and report on data for each fundraising campaign Enter new donations weekly and keep current records up-to-date. Reconcile information across different systems. Design and run reports in Salesforce and other systems. Executive Assistance (10%) Schedule meetings and maintain executive calendar. Make travel arrangements and prepare itineraries. Ensure that the executive director has all necessary information and materials for meetings, travel, and events. Manage and process credit card expenses for coding and payment. Organizational Responsibilities (5%) Participate in all grassroots fundraising campaigns and maintain a portfolio of individual and organizational prospects for solicitation. Participate in cross-department committees and teams. Rotating meeting facilitation and note taking. Provide support and participation for organization-wide and regional campaigns and events. Other Responsibilities Communications (15%) Support the communications team to correspond with CFJ's 4,000 online supporters via email and social media. Social media platforms include: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Linkedin. Search for and identify content (including CFJ updates and education and youth-focused news articles) to post to social media platforms weekly Copy edit all blog posts and emails created by other staff including checking for correct grammar, punctuation, and formatting. Post to CFJ's blog and send out regular emails (content is written by other staff) Participate in weekly communications team meetings and support special projects as needed - projects may include interviewing youth leaders for articles, calling media outlets, or attending events to support social media posting and photography. Essential Qualifications Highly organized, efficient, and systematic, with strong time management skills. High level of attention to detail, for example, an ability to spot minor errors such as typos in a letter or inconsistencies in an Excel spreadsheet Ability to enter large amounts of data quickly and accurately. Excellent communication skills, both written and oral. Strong commitment to social justice, racial justice and youth empowerment. Ability to coordinate others, recognize input, and hold people accountable. Strong computer skills with expertise in Microsoft Excel and other Microsoft Office programs. Ability and satisfaction working independently; ability to drive your own work Preferred Qualifications Experience with database administration Experience with grassroots fundraising campaigns. Experience with mail merges and management of postal mailings. Understanding of grassroots organizing, grassroots fundraising, and educational justice. Work Environment This position will work out of CFJ's office in Oakland. We are located on the second floor of a building. Offices are shared among several employees. Physical Demands Able to work on a computer, including sitting at a desk, for extended periods of time. Able to read a computer screen. Manual dexterity to operate a keyboard. Able to speak clearly on the phone and in person and be understood by others. Able to occasionally lift objects weighing up to 15 pounds. Compensation Approximately $19.40-$23.25 per hour, depending on experience and qualifications.
